The Minister of Trade, Luc Magloire Mbarga Atangana, representing the Prime Minister, laid the foundation stone for the project on April 29, 2024.
This initiative, a gift from President Paul Biya to the people of the South West region, aims to improve the livelihoods of the population by correcting disparities in domestic gas supply.
The region will no longer suffer from regular shortages and high prices, as the Gas Plant will ensure a steady supply of domestic gas.
According to Okie Johnson Ndoh, General Manager of the Hydrocarbons Prices Stabilization Fund (HPSF), the Kumba Gas Plant will be a game-changer for the region.
“Unlike the others, it will be very modern, super modern and will add as a catalyst of economic growth throughout the South West region,” he said.
The project, which will cost over 7 billion FCFA, will cater to the increasing demand for domestic gas, avert shortages, and price hikes.
The Gas Plant will comprise of two tanks, each with a capacity of 100m3, filling and storage halls, administrative buildings, and other facilities.
Beyond the construction of the Gas Plant, HPSF is committed to corporate social responsibility.
The project will include accompanying initiatives such as road opening and electrification of the community, making it a potential tourist attraction site.
The completion of the Kumba Gas Plant will mark a significant milestone in the region’s development, providing economic and social benefits to the local population.
With this project, the South West region will experience improved access to domestic gas, economic growth, and enhanced quality of life.
The HPSF has already carried out similar projects in other regions, including Maroua, Bertoua, Bamenda, and Ebolowa.
The Bamenda Gas Plant is set to be inaugurated on May 9, 2025, following the completion of construction works.
