Dignity Beyond the Forest: How Akom II’s Civic Drive is Restoring Identity to the Bagyeli Community

For decades, many members of the indigenous Bagyeli community in the dense tropical forests of Akom II, lived on the margins of national life, not by choice, but due to a fundamental lack of official documentation. Without birth certificates or National Identity Cards (CNI), basic citizenship rights, school enrollment, and access to healthcare remained out of reach.

Story, Louvier Kindo Tombe

On the occasion of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, celebrated in Cameroon on August 9, 2026, that narrative took a decisive turn toward empowerment.

In a landmark ceremony organized by civil society organization, Green Development Advocate – GDA, the Mayor of Akom II, Mme Elisabeth MEKA épse ATEBA MBALLA, organized the distribution of free birth certificates and national identity cards directly to Bagyeli community members, marking a major victory for civic inclusion in the Ocean Division.

A Milestone for Civic Inclusion

The distribution exercise served as the culmination of an intensive local administration drive aimed at closing the legal documentation gap among indigenous populations.

Addressing the gathering, Mayor Elisabeth MEKA emphasized that an official birth certificate is not merely a piece of paper, but the essential gateway to full citizenship, enabling children to attend school and adults to participate actively in civic and economic life.

“Identity is the foundation of every right,” the municipal authorities highlighted during the event. “No citizen of Akom II, especially among our indigenous Bagyeli brothers and sisters, should remain invisible to the state.”

Reaffirming her commitment to social justice, the Mayor pledged that the current wave of distributions is only the beginning. She assured the community that the municipal council will continue mobilizing resources to ensure every unregistered child and adult across the municipality receives proper legal identification.

Preserving the Value of Official Documents

Beyond the distribution, the event served as an important platform for civic education. In the past, due to a lack of awareness regarding the legal weight of administrative documents, some community members inadvertently neglected or damaged their birth certificates, occasionally discarding them as ordinary paper waste.

Addressing this challenge directly, Mayor Elisabeth MEKA cautioned beneficiaries to handle their official documents with absolute diligence and care, protecting them from damage or loss.

To reinforce this transition, the Mayor announced upcoming community sensitization campaigns across local settlements. These outreach drives will educate families on:

– The long-term legal value of national identity documents and birth records.

– The critical importance of systematically declaring all births and deaths at the civil status registry of the Akom II Council.

– Proper methods for safely storing administrative papers within households.

Bridging the Gap for Future Generations

As celebrations for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples concluded in Akom II, the atmosphere was filled with hope and renewed trust between municipal authorities and the Bagyeli people.

By pairing free administrative support with sustained civic education, the Akom II Council is laying a firm foundation for indigenous rights, ensuring that every Bagyeli child grows up recognized, protected, and empowered as a full citizen of Cameroon.
