The reconciliation meeting, held on January 28, 2025, at the Ministry of Territorial Administration in Yaounde.
The deal marks a significant breakthrough in the long-standing conflict.

The crisis began in 2022, when a dispute over land ownership and traditional boundaries sparked tensions between the two communities.
Matters came to a head in July 2023, when elements of the Sultan of the Bamoun, Nabil Mbombo Njoya, publicly humiliated the traditional ruler of the Tikar community during a visit to the Tikar palace.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and violence, resulting in loss of life and property thereafter.
However, thanks to Minister Atanga Nji’s intervention, the two communities have now agreed to put the past behind them and work towards a peaceful and prosperous future.
Besides the Minister, the two traditional rulers among others, the reconciliation effort was also attended by the Governor of the West Region, Awa Fonka Augustine, and the Governor of the Adamawa Region, Kildadi Taguieke Boukar.
As Cameroon prepares for the October 2025 presidential election, this reconciliation comes as a welcome relief.
The move by Minister Atanga Nji to broker peace between the two communities is a strategic step towards preventing the kind of violence and hate speech that often accompanies election periods.
