The suspense has finally been broken. Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril will lead the national assembly this 2023 legislative year as president. He was voted by his peers on Monday 27 March during a plenary at the national assembly.

Out of 159 MPs present, 146 voted for him while 13 others casted empty ballots. In his thanksgiving speech, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril thanked the national president of the ruling CPDM party for trusting him with another mandate.

“I have never betrayed, and I will never betray,” Hon. Cavaye said.

According to Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, the post of president of the national assembly is a prestigious one, reasons why he will spare no effort to merit the trust from president Paul Biya.

“I will be a national assembly president who listens to all without distinction,” the house speaker added.

The new national assembly president was grateful to his peers who concretised his re-election.

Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril is now president of the national assembly for the 31st year, and political pondits say it is thanks to his competent and fatherly management of his constituents and the national assembly as an institution. But the main reason they say, is based on his sincere collaboration and loyalty to president Paul Biya.

Critics however believe that the election of the bureau members of the national assembly, one week to the end of the March session, did not respect the constitution of the house. They were referring to article 16 sub 2a which indicates that the election intervenes at the beginning of the March session of parliament.

The rest of the bureau members (23 in number) were equally voted into office for another one year mandate.

Five deputy house speakers, four questors, and 12 secretaries constitute the new bureau from 5 political parties with seven women.
