In a significant development, President Paul Biya has received the endorsement of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Cameroon for the upcoming presidential election in October 2025.
The decision was made public Monday January 27, 2025 at the end of a meeting held at the Yaounde conference center, attended by over 100 traditional rulers from across the country’s 10 regions.
This meeting marked the first gathering of the National Council of Traditional Rulers of Cameroon since the passing of its pioneer president, HRH Alim Garga Hayatou, in 2021.
During the meeting, Paul Atanga Nji, Minister of Territorial Administration, urged the traditional rulers to continue collaborating with the government in addressing pressing national issues, particularly in the lead-up to the presidential election.
The council also unanimously elected HRH Guy Tsala Dzomo, as its new national president, succeeding the late HRH Alim Garga Hayatou.
HRH Tsala previously served as the council’s first vice president.
The motion of support from traditional rulers to President Paul Biya comes at a time the ruling CPDM party is looking up to their national president to officially declare his candidature ahead of the election.
The election is scheduled to take place in October 2025.
