In a bid to tackle the looming threat of climate change on child rights, UNICEF has joined forces with the National Observatory on Climate Change, signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on February 7, 2025.
This partnership aims to raise awareness about climate change and its devastating impact on children’s lives.
The MoU signed in Yaounde on Friday February 7, 2025, is expected to bolster UNICEF’s efforts in addressing climate change issues in the country, with the organization set to benefit from data provided by the observatory.
This data will enable UNICEF to better plan its operations and respond to the growing needs of children affected by climate change.
To mark the launch of this initiative, UNICEF introduced its climate mascot, Terra, who received her “birth certificate” and “vaccination record card” in the presence of officials from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
Terra is tasked with raising awareness about climate issues among people of all ages.

This partnership comes at a critical time, as climate change poses a significant risk to child rights globally.
Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, and environmental degradation are all taking a toll on children’s health, education, and well-being.
By working together, UNICEF and the National Observatory on Climate Change (ONACC) hope to mitigate the effects of climate change on children and ensure that their rights are protected.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, this partnership serves as a beacon of hope for a more sustainable and equitable future for all children.
