The 23rd edition of World Philosophy Day was celebrated on the theme “philosophy and human wellbeing”. It was a moment of fruitful exchanges between renowned philosophers and the students of the institution especially those of the philosophy club.
The idea was to encourage and edify members of the club as well as students in general, on the importance of philosophy.
“The theme of world philosophy day 2024 draws us to the relationship among us humans,” the principal of the institution said.
“Philosophy is love in wisdom.”
Various activities were organized to celebrate the day among which were; intellectual quizz, cultural displays, poems and comedy on philosophy and most especially a presentation from Prof. Charles Romain Mbele, university don.
Prof Charles Romain Mbele was guest of honour. In his presentation, emphasis was laid on the link between philosophy and human beings. The university don dissected the notion of philosophy to the student in line with the theme.
“The message I am trying to pass across is that we are not only physical beings, but we have intellectual, moral and other things that make us complete as humans,” Prof Charles Romain Mbele said.
”The principles of philosophy teaches us that we should not take others as objects to serve our interests.”
The philosophy club of Institut Polyvalent Wague on the occasion invited their peers from College George Brassence to join in the celebration. At the end of the day, the message from the Professor was well understood by the students.
“We learned that we should not tell lies, we should not steal, we should respect others dignity,” one of the students told this reporter.
It was the 12th edition of the World Philosophy Day celebration at the Wague Institute, coupled with the 2nd édition of “No Backpack Day”.
Understanding philosophy
Since the beginning of civilized human activity, philosophy has made an impact on the way that people live their lives, run governments, practice religion, and engage in their communities.
The study of philosophy can help to improve a person’s ability to solve problems, analyze concepts, understand arguments, and build into definitions. It can also help individuals to function better in their community and society as they can learn more about ways to integrate ideas and deal with questions of what is essential and valuable.
Introduced in 2002 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Philosophy Day celebrates the value that philosophy has to offer for the development of the people and cultures of the planet. By 2005, UNESCO established World Philosophy Day at their General Conference so that it would be celebrated every year.
Philosophy has opened the door for new concepts and innovative ideas, laying the foundations of critical thinking, independence and creativity across cultures for many centuries.
