On the eve of Cameroon’s presidential election, the African Union Election Observation Mission (AUEOM) has expressed strong expectations for a peaceful, transparent, and credible vote across the country.
Speaking to reporters in Yaoundé after a working session with the Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission and his team, the Head of Mission, Bernard Makuza, said the AU’s presence reflects the Union’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and electoral integrity in Africa.
“The African Union is here to observe, not to interfere. We want to see a process that gives every Cameroonian the opportunity to express their will freely, in peace and transparency,” Makuza told journalists.
Since their arrival in Cameroon, AU observers have held consultations with presidential candidates, government institutions, and other key stakeholders involved in the electoral process.
These engagements, Makuza explained, aim to assess the readiness of institutions and to promote confidence in the system ahead of Sunday’s decisive vote.
He further emphasized that the mission will deploy observers to various regions to monitor polling, counting, and results management, while maintaining impartiality and professionalism throughout the exercise.
The African Union joins several international and national observer teams already on the ground, all working toward ensuring that the 2025 presidential election upholds democratic standards and reflects the true will of the people.
As Cameroonians head to the polls, anticipation is high that the process will stand as a testament to the country’s growing commitment to democratic governance.
