From Ice to Inclusion: The Toghu Marathoner’s Vision for a Brighter Future

Afowiri Fondzenyuy, the Guinness World Record holder and renowned Toghu Marathoner, has just conquered the unforgiving terrain of Antarctica, completing his 19th marathon on six continents. But for this Cameroonian athlete, the real challenge lies not in the miles he runs, but in the impact he creates.

Story, Louvier Kindo Tombe

Fondzenyuy’s latest feat, finishing the Antarctica Marathon in 6 hours, 52 minutes, and 47 seconds, is a testament to his unyielding spirit.

Battling extreme cold, relentless winds, and a rugged, icy terrain, he slipped and fell during the race but got back up to finish – a true display of resilience.

“This was the hardest marathon I have ever done,” he admitted.

“Every part of it—physically and mentally—was punishing, but quitting was never an option.”

What makes Fondzenyuy’s achievement even more remarkable is his decision to run in Toghu, Cameroon’s richly embroidered traditional regalia, despite the freezing air stiffening the fabric and adding weight to an already heavy outfit.

“At some point, I felt like I was carrying a suit of armor,” he said. “The cold had turned my Toghu into something almost unmovable, but I kept pushing.”

But Fondzenyuy’s Antarctica Marathon wasn’t just about personal glory; it was about making a difference.

He undertook the venture to raise awareness and funds to build a school for children with special needs in Cameroon.

“This is more than running—it’s about making a difference,” he said. “Every step I take is a step closer to building a future for children who deserve the best education and opportunities.”

Now, Fondzenyuy is turning his passion for running into a force for change, using his resilience and cultural representation to drive initiatives that transform lives.

His mission is to build a school in Cameroon that provides inclusive education for children with autism and other special needs.

“Our goal is to acquire land and begin construction, ensuring long-term support for underprivileged families,” he explained.

Beyond constructing a school, Fondzenyuy is committed to increasing autism awareness and providing resources for families caring for autistic children in Cameroon.

He aims to advocate for policies that promote inclusivity in schools and public spaces and establish programs that equip families with knowledge, therapy access, and essential tools for raising autistic children.

As Fondzenyuy shifts his focus to the next phase of his mission, one thing is clear: his journey is more than just about running – it’s about building a legacy of hope, inclusion, and cultural pride that will impact generations to come.

With his sights set on completing the prestigious Seven Continents Marathon Challenge, Fondzenyuy remains driven by a singular purpose: to make a difference, one step at a time.
