The philosophy day at Wague Bilingual Comprehensive Institute was organized precisely by the philosophy club of the school. The idea was to encourage and edify members of the club as well as students in general, on the importance of philosophy.
“Philosophy helps us to carry out permanent research in acquiring knowledge to better prepare for the future,” says Nanga Emmanuelle, president of the philosophy club.
Various activities were organized to celebrate the day among which were; intellectual quizz, cultural displays, and most especially a presentation from Prof. Nathanaël Noël Owono Zambo, head of the philosophy department at the university of Yaounde I. He was guest of honour. Emphasis was laid on digitizing philosophy lessons and how teachers and students can make the best out of it in this digital era.
“I think that with the installation of a philosophy laboratory, we can succeed in the digitization of philosophy knowledge,” Prof. Nathanaël Noël Owono Zambo said.
With his rich experience in the domain, the professor guarded and guided the young philosophers on how to make their dream work, especially in the digital era where there is fake news, misinformation and disinformation on social media. His presence alone in the institution was a sign of encouragement to the students, and also to the promoter of the academic institution.
“I am proud to receive a renowned personality like Prof. Nathanaël Noël with unmatched expertise in philosophy. It is our wish to always bring in experts to share experiences with our students,” says Mr. François Wague, promoter of the institution.
The philosophy day at Wague Bilingual Comprehensive Institute was in prelude to the world philosophy day to be celebrated on Thursday November 16, 2023.
Understanding philosophy
Since the beginning of civilized human activity, philosophy has made an impact on the way that people live their lives, run governments, practice religion, and engage in their communities.
The study of philosophy can help to improve a person’s ability to solve problems, analyze concepts, understand arguments, and build into definitions. It can also help individuals to function better in their community and society as they can learn more about ways to integrate ideas and deal with questions of what is essential and valuable.
Introduced in 2002 by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), World Philosophy Day celebrates the value that philosophy has to offer for the development of the people and cultures of the planet. By 2005, UNESCO established World Philosophy Day at their General Conference so that it would be celebrated every year.
Philosophy has opened the door for new concepts and innovative ideas, laying the foundations of critical thinking, independence and creativity across cultures for many centuries.
