Cameroon: stakeholders brainstorm on financing development

A forum to finance the implementation of the national development strategy (NDS30) took place in Yaounde on Tuesday 28 March 2023.

By organising a forum on financing for development in Cameroon, the government wants to pool the efforts of all development actors and partners in order to obtain a consensus on the ways and means for adequate structural transformation.

“Today we are here to see how we can put in our efforts to mobilize more resources in achieving the national development strategy goals,” says Alassane Ba, Interim resident representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

In his statement at the opening ceremony of the forum, Alassane Ba said “financing development is a big challenge”.

“We need resources but we also need to use the resources efficiently.”

“Our role is to support the government of Cameroon in order to achieve the targets of the national development strategy,” Alassane Ba, told this reporter.

The forum held on the theme “financing for inclusive and sustainable socio-economic development”.

Stakeholders agreed on important steps and initiatives to take to ensure the effective implementation of the national strategy for the integrated financing of the NDS30.

“Our aim is to have a national framework of integrated financing,” says Alamine Ousmane Mey, minister of the economy, planning and regional development.

The minister who chaired deliberations at the forum is the president of the forum.

“Allocation of resources obtained should be targeted towards achieving sustainable development goals,” says minister Alamine Ousmane Mey.

Those present at the forum were decision makers, the private sector, technical and financial partners, national and international investors, local and regional authorities, civil society organisations, just to name but these.

“We cannot talk development without the base, and the base here is made up of local and regional authorities,” says Alamine Ousmane Mey.

The participants at the end of the forum agreed to conquer new markets, new financial landscape in relation to the mobilisation of internal, international and alternative finance.

The Yaounde forum was in prelude to a high level dialogue with respect to development financing that will take place in the US come September 2023.
