The sum of 15 Billion FCFA from the debt cancellation program, 2019 – 2021 would be injected to boost the Education, Health and Rural Development sectors.
Tuesday July 21, 2020 the ad-hoc committee charged with the follow-up of the billateral agreement between Cameroon and Italy on the cancellation of Cameroon’s debt met in Yaounde.
It was their first session for 2020 which took place at the Ministry of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development.
The committee identified some key projects to be executed by the government of Cameroon in some four (4) regions of the country.
Adamawa, East, Far North and North regions have been selected.
The following projects have been earmarked for execution;
– 21 Primary schools,
– 13 Integrated Health Centers,
– 01 District Health Center,
– 02 Sub Divisional Medical Centers,
– 01 Mother and Child Center among others.
Heavy financial assistance would also be given to the Chantal Biya’s Integrated Research Center.
The impact of the projects will be felt at all levels.
7500 pupils educated each year, and the phenomenon of teachers being absent from their duty posts in the concerned regions for one reason or the other will end.
This as the schools will each have lodging facilities for teachers, six classrooms equiped with a table and benches, an administrative building, bore hole taps and solar electrification systems just to name but these.
About 200 people will be impacted directly daily thanks to the projects listed above.
The ad-hoc committee session of Tuesday, July 21 was co chaired by the Italian Ambassador to Cameroon, H. E. Marco Romiti and Cameroon’s Minister of the Economy, Planning and Regional Development Alamine Ousmane Mey.
Focus was on disbursing funds from the debt cancellation program to identified sectors and according to the Italian Ambassador, 12 Billion FCFA worth projects have been earmarked.
The MINEPAT boss saluted the gesture from Italy on behalf of the Government of Cameroon.
“Achieving sustainable development can only happen if we are capable of ensuring good education and health access to our people” the Minister said.
The debt cancellation program it should be noted will run till 2042 and the global amount is 99 Billion FCFA that Cameroon would benefit.
