Many are Cameroonians who get dubed on a daily bases through illegal mobile telephone transactions.
Just like it is easy to fall prey to mobile telephone scammers, it is equally very easy to avoid and stay safe from their dubious actions.
“On a certain evening while on hangout with friends, I received a call from an unknown number indicating a Mobile Money transfer to my phone which was actually destined to a patient in the hospital”, Kennedy, a denizen in Yaounde told News Upfront.
“The caller pleaded that l resend half of the amount and keep the rest” Kennedy added.
Kennedy tried to verify if he received an alert and stumbled on a fake alert drafted same as Mobile Money transfer alerts, and immediately sent the agreed amount to the unknown caller who gave a different MOMO acount for the transaction alleging it’s the patient’s account.
Unfortunately he didn’t verify whether his account was actually credited or not. He was scammed.
Other victims who narrated their ordeals to News Upfront partially blamed the mobile telephone companies for not doing much to protect their customers’ interest.
News Upfront reached out to one of the influential mobile telephone companies in Cameroon for a proper understanding of the situation.
It was discovered that the situation is even more serious at Orange Cameroon than narrated by users, but measures are in place to assist clients.
Responding to similar request on their twitter account Wednesday June 24, the marketing department of Orange Cameroon outlined the strategy used by mobile scammers.
To them, scammers will attempt to send you an Orange Money (OM) transfer just to get your name to use in convincing you through phone calls as they put their dubious actions to play.
At Orange Cameroon, sensitisation and vigilance are key factors when it comes to customer care.

– No official message from Orange Cameroon goes to customers with the common Orange phone numbers. It’s either delivered with the code “Orange” or the “Short Number” code of 905…..
These are tips that customers actually need to know to stay safe while hoping that the operators do well to secure the accounts of their customers.
