The laureates of the 4th edition of the Award of Excellence in Health Leadership in Cameroon (PELSC) will be revealed in the days ahead. This information was made public by the president of the organising Committee, Joseph Mbeng Boum during a press briefing organised in Yaounde on Monday October 18, 2021.
Placed under the theme “Let’s celebrate health actors in the context in the context of covid-19 in Cameroon,” the award is set up to honour actors of the Cameroonian health system and those who act beyond our borders, particularly to all those who have recently been facing an unprecedented increase in their workload due to Covid-19 patients, while at the same time ensuring the operation of other essential health services.
This comes at a moment when there is a growing concern about health performance in Cameroon. This health performance essentially depends on the motivation of health personnel. Indeed, the motivation of human resources, which represent the cornerstone of the success of any hospital structure in its public service mission, is an extremely relevant element and constitutes an essential source that contributes to improving performance at work.
However, the underfunding of health systems and the negligence with which they are managed, lead to bad practices and structures of management and planning of human resources.
Poor working conditions, lack of professional autonomy, lack of supervision and support, length of schedules, insecurity at work, inadequate career structures, unfair wages, limited access to supplies, tools and information, limited or no access to professional development opportunities are some major problems faced by health institutions in the country today.
It is in this light that the ÉCHOS SANTE group organises the award of Excellence, to shine light on health personnel and to make them feel their worth.
“Health professionals and those on the front lines of the fight against Covid-19 deserve our recognition and respect for the efforts they make to save lives and for the personal sacrifices they make, while they are themselves exposed to increased risks to their own health and that, in certain contexts, they are also victims of ostracism, harassment and violence,” explained the president of the Organizing Committee, Joseph Mbeng Boum.
The award constitutes of 12 categories with 80 laureates, among whom we have Public Health Training (1st category: general hospitals, 2nd category: referral hospitals, 3rd category: regional hospitals, 4th category: district hospitals); Private Health Trainings (Polyclinics, Medical centers and clinics, Social medical foundations); Health Services (Central and decentralized services); Security and Law Enforcement Forces in the Health Sector (Prison health, Police health, Military health); Civil Society (NGOs, Associations); Media (Written press, Radio, TV, Cybernetics); Traditional Medicine (Incentive price for research actors for traditional medicines improved); Health Insurance Prizes (Health insurance, Mutual insurance), Diaspora Cameroon Medical Innovation Special Awards and Women’s Health Leadership Award.

It is aimed at encouraging and rewarding health professionals who stand out significantly in improving the health system in Cameroon in general and in the fight against Covid-19 in particular.
