Despite measures taken by government on March 17 against the spread of COVID-19 in the country, Cameroonians have remained stubborn to heed to the gentlemanly calls to order.
Feasting and fanfare in crowded places seem unstoppable among denizens.
It is on this premise that regional governors of Cameroon’s South West and East Regions have resort to the Cameroonian way, the hard way.
Almost at same time, the no nonsense Bernard Okali Bilia of the South West Region has ordered an end to drinking and eating in off licences, bars, snacks, night clubs and restaurants, his colleague Governor of the East Region, Grégoire Mvongo has taken same measure in his Region.
In their respective communiqués signed on March 31st, it is spelt out that restaurants and entertainment spots across these regions shall henceforth only sell to their costumers for consumption at home.
Palm wine sellers and those who sell spirit drinks (afo-fo) have not been exempted.
Municipal and local administrators as well as the forces of law and order shall ensure the strict implementation of the gubernatorial decision.
This decision comes at a time when many a Cameroonian still live life as though they dress in anti-COVID-19 coats.
Drinking in beer parlours and clubbing above 6pm, the Prime Ministerial restricted time, gatherings of more than 50 persons are still very common across cities.
To some extent, Cameroonians lock up themselves in drinking spots, as if to say they are dribbling government just to savour the pleasure of liquor.
Perhaps, Cameroonians need a state of emergency to respect orders that can reduce coronavirus spread and save the lives of all, experts believe.
