The association of women around the SOCAPALM plantation in Edea, Sanaga Maritime division of the Litoral region of Cameroon (AFRISE) has launched a petition against the replanting of the oil palm plantation in Apouh à Ngog village by SOCAPALM.
They are complaining that the plantation is set up close to their homes, and on the graves of their ancestors. The plantation according to them has occupied their land, some illegally, and the activities of the agro-industry is causing negative impacts in the neighbouring villages. Streams are polluted, they riparian women are now denied access to Non Timber Forest Products in the plantation, and those who dare are brutalized, arrested, and detained in some cases.
The women of AFRISE launched the petition to mark the 2023 international day for the elimination of violence against women on 25 November. They intend to collect signatures in support of the move to call on SOCAPALM to stop the replanting process around their homes. The signed petitions will be presented to the relevant decision-makers, and the deadline to sign has been fixed for December 15, 2023.
The women want to seize the opportunity to equally advocate for the elimination of all forms of violence against women, and they believe collective action is better.
To show solidarity with the women of AFRISE, join and sign the petition.
